Unlocking the value of mobility data

Ganvam creates a consortium to facilitate the digital transformation of the automobile sales and repair sector

  • With the aim of accelerating the professional reconversion of distribution and avoiding the destruction of 20% of its workforce in the next ten years
  • Through the implementation of a shared, open-source ecosystem from which the sector will be able to provide citizens with all the services associated with connected mobility
  • DGT, Iberdrola, Santander Consumer Finance, and DEKRA are among the corporations joining the Ganvam NeXo project, which hopes to accelerate development by mobilizing part of its 480-million-euro budget through the Next Generation EU funds

Madrid, 12 April 2021. In just ten years, 67% of the vehicles sold will be used for subscription mobility services, according to data from Roland Berger for Spain’s National Association of Vehicle Sellers (GANVAM). Faced with this paradigm shift, the vehicle distribution association has created a consortium to facilitate the transformation of the sales and repair sector, shifting its focus to this new model where, in the words of its president, Raúl Palacios, “we will go from selling iron [in reference to the car and its parts] to selling services, with data management as our main asset”.

With this in mind, and with the aim of accelerating the professional reconversion of the sector to avoid losing 20% of its 350,000-person labor force, Ganvam has initiated the creation of an open, collaborative ecosystem for whoever wants to join, aimed at offering mobility solutions to individuals, companies, and public institutions, with the connectivity, data management, and charging stations for electric cars as its pillars.

The General Traffic Directorate (DGT), Iberdrola, Santander Consumer Finance, and DEKRA are among the twenty corporations that have shown their support for the project, named Ganvam NeXo, which hopes to accelerate development by mobilizing part of its 480-million-euro budget through the Next Generation EU funds.

Ganvam NeXo, which, among other corporations, has the support of other financial entities such as Cetelem or SoYou; marketpleces like Adevinta (Cars.net) or Cars.com; vehicle providers like BCA; technology partners such as Net4things, Bemycar or Iomob; urban mobility operators such as Saba; mobility operators such as BlaBlaCar, or infrastructure managers and mobility operators such as Globalvia, is among the projects of interest that both the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism and the Ministry of Mobility, Transport, and Urban Planning have convened to identify projects that drive competitiveness and contribute to the digital transition within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan called España Puede (Spain is Able).

Likewise, it is aligned with other government strategies and plans such as the 2030 Strategy for Safe, Sustainable, and Connected Mobility or the 2025 Digital Spain Plan, as well as with European initiatives such as the Green Deal or the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), more specifically with \”decent work and economic growth\” (SDG-8), \”industry, innovation, and infrastructure\” (SDG-9), and \”sustainable cities and communities\” (SDG-11).

According to Palacios, “This ecosystem will favor not only the adaptation of SMEs to a new market reality, but will also contribute to an urban model where, judging by the trend, the number of cars on the road will decrease in favor of increased use of each vehicle, which will lower the cost of shared mobility services, decongesting traffic and ultimately favoring a more sustainable, safe, and connected environment.”According to Palacios, “This ecosystem will favor not only the adaptation of sales and repair SMEs to a new market reality that demands the development of mobility systems where connectivity and data management are key, but will also contribute to an urban model where, judging by the trend, the number of cars on the road will decrease in favor of increased use of each vehicle, which will lower the cost of shared mobility services, decongesting traffic and ultimately favoring a more sustainable, safe, and connected environment.”

Hence, one of the lines of work is to democratize and bring connected mobility closer to all citizens, knowing that more than 82% of drivers express their willingness to connect their vehicle in light of the benefits it brings.Hence, one of the lines of work is to democratize and bring connected mobility closer to all citizens, knowing that more than 82% of drivers express their willingness to connect their vehicle in light of the benefits it brings.

Using the broad reach of Ganvam\’s distribution networks to offer a mobile device that makes sold or repaired vehicles smarter, the association aligns itself with and contributes to the achievement of the Spanish General Directorate of Traffic (DGT)’s 3.0 platform, by virtue of which intelligent and sustainable mobility is pursued through connecting vehicles to infrastructures.Using the broad reach of Ganvam\’s distribution networks to offer a mobile device that makes sold or repaired vehicles smarter, the association aligns itself with and contributes to the achievement of the Spanish General Directorate of Traffic (DGT)’s 3.0 platform, by virtue of which intelligent and sustainable mobility is pursued through connecting vehicles to infrastructures.

The National Association of Vehicle, Repair, and Spare Parts Sellers (GANVAM) is a non-profit and politically independent organization founded in 1957 that groups more than 7,000 associates among official dealers; independent sales; official services; agencies and independent workshops, among other distribution sectors: new vehicles; used vehicles; passenger cars; industrial vehicles; motorcycles and agricultural tractors. Together, these companies market and service more than 80% of the national fleet. The main objective of Ganvam is to represent the interests of distributors and repair shops to the Government, the different administrations and society in general, enhancing the socioeconomic role played by its sector, with the creation of 350,000 direct jobs and a turnover of more than 95,000 million, 9% of GDP.
